On Saturday 8th February Norfolk Wherry Brass were delighted to welcome Jonny Bates, Principal Tenor Horn player for Black Dyke, for a workshop ahead of the area contest in March.
Jonny put the band through their paces on this year’s third section test piece, Philip Wilby’s Partita for Band (Postcards from Home). A challenging piece for any third section band, the band found the workshop very productive and enjoyable, picking up some top tips along the way.
Musical Director Andrew Craze said, “it was a great experience for the band to have someone like Jonny bring a fresh, upbeat and enthusiastic attitude along with his extensive experience for someone his age.”
That same evening, most of the band went to a packed Norwich Cathedral to listen to an outstanding sell out concert given by Black Dyke, with those in attendance buzzing with awe and inspiration thanks to Dyke’s world class playing.
Norfolk Wherry and Jonny have a firm standing relationship following the band’s win at the 2012 National Championships with Bates’ 4th section test piece, A British Isles Suite.
The band hope that relationship continues to flourish as they look forward to working with Jonny again in the near future.
